Road Sweeping: Ontario’s Quest For A Clean Environment

Each country wants to maintain a clean environment on its vicinity as well as maintaining sidewalks and streets. This is to create the impression that cleanliness and orderliness is observed by its residents as well as tourists. Road sweeping is scheduled on streets to eliminate dusts and other clutters by responsible sweepers.

The City of Kingston, Ontario itself has 4 road sweepers who work in tandem to sufficiently wipe out and clean over 1,200 traffic lane kilometer streets. This is in the urban and suburban areas of Ontario alone. These sweepers may use board hoppers to collect sand or by vacuum and most often times, road sweeping is improved by the use of flusher dump trucks.

The city’s transportation services are responsible for the maintenance of their sidewalks and roads, traffic safety, traffic lights and signals, pavement markings, street cleaning, snow plowing, road sweeping, motorists and pedestrian concerns, street activities and permits on street parking, construction of new roads, streets, subways and other restrictions and implementation of policies.

Health is a major concern that Ontario is serious about. They are making sure that local residents are free from harsh elements. Thus, the city’s transportation services aimed for a better air quality by developing environmental policies as well as programs that highlights energy efficiency.

The Clean and Beautiful City program by the Transportation Services of the City of Ontario is designed to minimize or zero-out litters on streets and to craft beautiful street gardens and trees that will be maintained by assigned city landscapers. Road sweeping is one way to clear out clutters that is done early morning where the streets are still not busy from vehicular traffic. It is also encouraged that local architectural designs and murals that are hand-painted will be displayed on the streets and to ensure they are well-made.

There are various street sweeper technologies that are developed, evaluated, and tested with regards to its efficiency in removing some particulate matter in the air. According to the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, PM10 and PM2.5 are both already considered toxic and is hazardous to health. The newly developed sweepers will have to operate for the entire year including winter periods and other road sweeping activities of the city.

However, there are professional road cleaners in Greater Toronto Area (GTA) that offer services like road sweeping, snow removal, street cleaning, debris removal that utilizes high-end machines and equipment. These are licensed companies and they might be hired to perform the street job.

With much concern on air and the environment, the Idling by-law is implemented with the goal that vehicle owners should not stay idling their engines for no more than 3 minutes in a given 60-minute time period, else, if caught, will be charge a fine of ,000. According to studies, it is believed that contaminants would build up while one is idling his vehicle as the emissions would create some respiratory health effects. Facts show that contaminants from vehicle emissions are one of the contributors in damaging the air quality in Toronto. With these, transit vehicles and private car owners are advised to warm up their vehicles while driving than warming them up staying idle. They could benefit on this idea to save or reduce half to their fuel consumption.

The Transportation Services of the City is always looking for advance technologies in maintaining the cleanliness of the streets. Looking for better ways and methods for everyone to breathe fresh air in a highly urbanized area by its road sweeping services and policies.
