Ontario’s Street Sweeping Program Is The Unsung Hero For Pollution Control

Considered as the largest city in Canada, GTA has a growing population of 4.7 million. GTA, Ontario is a clean, residential city and is considered safe for walking at night.
Ontario’s Clean Roads to Clean Air Program was initiated in 2003 by the Transportation Services. The Program specifically aims to evaluate street sweeping and flushing machines on their efficiency in eliminating fine particulate matter that are considered as harmful substances according to the Canadian Environmental Protection Act.
Street sweeping and flushing is done by the Department of Public Works and is usually eliminated by assigned contractors or the city council’s own direct labor force. Street sweeping is not often done for extended hours. Street sweeping hours usually range from 8 am until 2 pm in most areas.
Street cleansing or sweeping is a part of the city’s housekeeping to protect and keep the environment pollution-free. It is done by using more and more highly mechanized tools such as modern street sweepers and flushers.
In this save the planet conscious age and time, there are so many agencies and organizations that help in promoting and protecting the earth’s natural resources. In most rural and urban areas, recycling programs are becoming more and more common and many residents practice actively in recycling programs by placing blue boxes on the curbside regularly.
Cleaning machines perks up the residential and commercial street’s appearance and aesthetics. This equipment can also eliminate different kinds of debris that are dangerous to the public especially to children and pets.
Many people don’t understand that mechanical sweepers do not just spread debris and dirt around, they gather the litter and prevent them from entering storm drains and waterways.
It is very natural for people seeing a street sweeper in progress to conclude that these machines are just sweeping litter. What they don’t know is that about 80% of the debris collected by mechanical sweepers looks like dirt, these are actually a cocktail of natural and artificial chemicals and minerals.
The litters gathered by street sweeping machines are usually composed of decomposed vegetation, sand, clay, silt and dirt. These materials are relatively harmless. On the other hand these natural ingredients can quickly and easily combine and mix with other elements found on roadsides including abundant hydrocarbons contributed by vehicle exhaust, trace metal and engine oil left behind by the brake linings of cars, buses and other type of street transportation.
If collected in high concentrations, these harmful compounds has a great chance of making their way into residential and business area’s storm drain system. These harmful chemicals can continue down the long waterways and ultimately poison our wildlife and drinking water systems.
Almost all urban cities and residential spots that experience extreme snowy winters also require the implementation of aggressive street sweeping. By doing this, they can prevent the build-up of waste, debris, road salt and other dangerous minerals from entering the storm drainage system.
People can surely say that the mechanical sweepers are today’s modern world unsung hero when it comes to environmental protection. These machines are considered as the first line of defense for wildlife conservation and a protector of the continued safety of the earth’s rivers, lakes, and waterway systems.
