Green Apples – Macs’ Impacts On The Environment
In planning the design of the MacBook line of personal computers, Apple set out to make it the greenest, most environmentally friendly computer in the world. Their goal was to ensure that every new MacBook would be built using recyclable materials while at the same time avoiding many of the harmful chemicals and other substances that are present in other computers.
Some of the formidable goals Apple computer set out for itself was eliminating the toxic mercury used in CCFL backlights and the arsenic that is present in the glass of traditional LCD displays. To do this, the engineers at Apple replaced these outdated and dangerous toxins by choosing mercury-free LED technology and arsenic-free glass. Other toxins in personal computers included polyvinyl chloride (PVC) that is commonly used in circuit boards, connectors, insulators, internal cables and even more components. Another toxin the computer company wanted to eliminate was brominated flame retardants.
And the company has been completely successful. The MacBook laptop computers are produced without any of these toxins and the same is true for the Apple iPod family – the iPod touch, iPod classic and iPod Nano. The iPhone 3G and the Apple Mac LED Cinema Display are also free of those toxic elements.
The components in this computer are also highly recyclable. The enclosure – or body – is formed from a single piece of solid, recyclable aluminum. This single sheet technology replaces dozens of extraneous parts. The laptop computers’ displays are made of recyclable glass and can be recycled yet again. The raw materials used in the new MacBook computers can be reused again and again in other products.
But the company didn’t stop there in their environmental commitment. To reduce the energy consumed by the laptop, the new hard drive spins down automatically when inactive. The new LED-backlit display uses 30 percent less power than conventional LCD displays and the laptop’s display is designed to automatically dim when the user is working in a darker environment. When it comes to final energy consumption, the MacBook can run on one-quarter of the power of a single light bulb.
In addition, the battery in the 17-inch MacBook Pro can last up to five years – that equals roughly 1000 recharges with normal use. This means the laptop computer uses one battery during the time other companies’ notebooks use three. Longer battery life equals fewer spent computer batteries in our landfills, and that’s good news for the environment.

Recycled Printer Cartridges – Saving Money While Saving The Environment
Having a printer attached to your PC opens up a whole new aspect of using your computer; from printing out documents so they look professional to printing the photos from your digital camera, a home printer is an excellent way to get what you see on your screen onto paper. Most UK homes have at least one, but many users will find themselves not using it as much as they might like because they are concerned about the cost of printer cartridges.
Just a few years ago, the only option for replacing your printer cartridges if they ran out of ink was to buy them from the manufacturer which would sometimes cost more than the printer did. Those days are thankfully gone, with many stores nationwide now selling official printer cartridges, lower-priced compatibles, recycled cartridges or even home refill kits for less than you may expect.
Recycled printer cartridges offer many advantages over buying official or compatible units – they will often cost less than both of these, and save the hassle and mess of refilling your cartridge yourself. A recycled unit is exactly what its name implies – a printer cartridge that has been used and refilled. Many stockists of printers and ink will offer a cartridge ‘dump’ where empty ink units can be handed in to save the owner throwing them away. Some stores will even offer money for empty cartridges. These are then refilled in-store, resealed and sold as recycled units, giving the customer the peace of mind that the refill has been undertaken by someone who knows what they’re doing and also that they are helping the environment by not generating extra waste.
Though recycled units offer one of the cheapest ways of replacing your printer cartridges, not all stores carry them. If this service isn’t available in your local store, you can still save money by purchasing a compatible unit which is a cartridge made to the same specifications as that of the printers manufacturer but cheaper. These are available for most brands and models of printer and, while not as cheap as recycled cartridges there’s not always that much of a difference.
A home ink refill kit is usually the most affordable option, and they also save on the waste generated by buying new units, but they can be difficult to do properly and will create a lot of mess if they go wrong.
With the ever-increasing competition in the electronics market, even official replacement ink cartridges cost far less than they used to and the days of buying a new printer instead of ink are behind us, but there are always more ways to save both money and the environment and recycling cartridges is a step in the right direction.

Improving The Working Environment With VDU Training
In the modern business environment, safety comes first. And Britain – a nation famed for its rules, regulations and safety procedures – is no exception. The majority of workers in a service economy such as ours use computers. And as such VDU training has become important in maintaining a safe and comfortable working environment.
VDU training – which stands for Visual Display Unit training – has become increasingly used to raise awareness of the issues surrounding using computers all day. Humans have not evolved to sit down all day staring at a glowing rectangle, but the modern global economy demands that we do so.
It may surprise many people just how many issues there are related to the process of sitting down and looking at a computer screen. One of the things that VDU training highlights is the importance of posture while sitting at a desk. By adopting a suitable sitting position, workers can avoid many back-related problems in the future.
VDU training also benefits employers as many work hours are missed from work by workers suffering from back related problems. By making employees aware of their posture and how their computer and desk is set up, these problems should be avoidable.
Screen glare is also an issue which can cause discomfort for some people. By taking note of where light comes in from the window and how a computer screen reflects the subsequent light, workers can adjust their equipment to minimise the glare. If the set up or nature of a worker’s equipment cannot be adjusted appropriately, then some form of anti glare filter can be applied to the screen in question, thereby reducing any negative effects on the worker.
Another consideration is the effect of glare from light coloured walls in the office or working environment.
Most VDU training courses will also inform people that if an employee’s feet do not comfortable touch the floor, then a foot rest should be used. The set up of a working environment should also be adapted to the kinds of work being done. For example, if someone does more writing than typing, then perhaps a particular computer/desk/pad situation might be suitable. If someone is typing all day long, alternatively, then a more direct computer screen facing the user might be more appropriate.
Another issue that VDU training can highlight is the importance of not needing to stretch too far to use one’s mouse or other computer related equipment.
It is usually the case that those participating in VDU training courses find out something they did not know about computer usage. Frequently people find out a great deal more than they might have thought they would.
Anna Stenning is an expert on VDU training having advised many companies on the subject.

Hybrid Cars for a Clean and Green Environment
In basic Science lessons, the emergence of global warming is due to many factors we constantly penalize to the environment. The chain reaction has come into its obvious persistence by just merely observing what people do to damage the planet Earth. Some people might be aware or even unaware of their contributions to the eventual destruction of the environment. Global warming is undoubtedly an indication of a battered world. Environmental issues actively participate in daily news that some people and organizations do something to repel the worst case scenario but outnumbering these concerned citizens are people who do not care to fight the bout between restoration and annihilation.
However, as global warming begins to take its toll, there are still many ways wherein we can create a safer environment for the future generations. A simple and concrete way of caring for the nature is an enormous contribution. You do not need to be an environmentalist to grab the essence. You must just be fully aware of the factors which can directly or even indirectly affect the natural flow and condition of the environment.
Pollution has long been a diversified issue causing global warming. This detrimental factor is brought about by the long standing exposure of the environment to hazards such as vehicular smoke. Since more and more people feel the need to have their own cars as primary necessity, more and more cars are purchased and run in the streets. The pile up of the production results to a strangling clouds of smoke pollution accumulated in the air, and thus causing global warming in long term basis. The continuity of this scenario can be most lethal in the future.
Hybrid cars are recognized to be one of the most innovative yet environment friendly creations of technology. The revolutionized and intricately planned design has given hybrid cars a global reputation in helping construct a safer and cleaner environment. Even though hybrid cars are not capable of directly healing Mother Nature, their usage is a big help in minimizing the possibility of global destruction.
More over, hybrid cars are not just genius creations in protecting the environment. A hybrid car can also help the shallow breathing economy. As we all know, fuel prices are choking our budget. Their sudden upsurge due to the downturn of the economy is a heavy load to Calvary. Maintaining our cars by feeding them with gasoline everyday is a big overhead. For some people, who have previously owned a car but are not able to sustain the maintenance, would just sell their cars and turn as public commuters. Some would just even sacrifice walking if they really are crunching financially. But for some people who have the budget to buy cars, it is highly recommended that they must consider hybrid cars instead of non hybrid ones. Hybrid cars are really expensive but the quality absolutely matches the tag! The price indicates the unique and healthy features of hybrid cars instead of being presented as a luxury possession.

Large Area Rugs Makes Room And Environment Feel Warmer
In many homes, large area rugs can help create a quieter and warmer environment as well as protect floors for inadvertent damage. Persons with hardwood floors may choose to have a carpet covering a large section of the floor to protect it from damage as well as to have warmer to walk on during cold weather. Large area rugs can also protect expensive hardwood flooring from damage from unseen particles that can scratch the finish as well as from the nails of any animals roaming freely around the house.
Carpeting will also make room feel warmer in cold weather as typical wood or vinyl surfaces, regardless of the room’s ambient temperature, may feel colder to walk on that one covered by large area rugs. They can also be used under table in the dining are of the home and are often used to protect the floor’s original surface from damage by chair legs and other movable furniture in the room.
One caution when rolling out large area rugs in a room is to make sure all the legs or feet of furniture are either on the carpet or on the floor. Small tables and chairs can be unstable if all four of their legs are not on the same level of surface. The overall cover of large area rugs should also be coordinated with the main color of the room in which it is located.
Area Rugs Easier To Maintain
One the main advantages of using large area rugs as opposed to wall-to-wall carpeting is they are easier to maintain and are usually less expensive than many full-floor carpets. When cleaning carpeting, much of the cleaning solvents and water soaks through the carpet and can damage the underlying floor materials. This can be devastating to expensive hardwood flooring materials and equally disastrous to less expensive floors of dubious quality.
In the event large area rugs require extensive cleaning, many companies offer service to remove the rug and clean it outside the home, brining the large area rugs back into the home in clean and sanitized conditions. By having it serviced by professionals, the life of the carpet is usually extended.
Whenever a room feels too cold in the winter, or even too noisy when someone just walks across the room, large area rugs can take care of the problem. Installation of large area rugs is also quick and easy and in most cases the resident can roll the rug into position without the need for professional installation.

Education Veteran Turns to Virtual Environment
A lifetime in education and a mission to empower both students and staff are what drive Margaret Mary Wilson, Ed.D. Like any good student, Dr. Wilson is still pursuing new learning experiences after more than 30 years in education. Her most recent challenge as the new executive director of Tutapoint.com brings her into the emerging frontier of online academia.
Tutapoint.com, based in Connecticut and Manhattan, offers live, one-on-one, Internet-based math and science tutoring to students in grades 9 through 12. Tutors are available on-demand or by appointment.
“We are extremely pleased to have attracted someone with such a passion and depth of experience,” said Tutapoint.com co-founder Ryan Duques. “Dr. Wilson’s experience will help lead Tutapoint’s mission to answer the increasing need for supplemental education throughout the United States.”
Dr. Wilson, a resident of Tennessee, has been a long-time proponent of the benefits of academic enrichment programs throughout her distinguished career, which has included professorships at Tennessee universities and colleges and consultant posts with several school districts and state departments of education.
As the founder of EdSolutions, Wilson designed and implemented an after-school enrichment model in response to the shortage of quality academic after-school programs in the Nashville, Tenn., public schools. EdSolutions later became a leading provider in the supplement education services industry. Before the firm merged with Knowledge Learning Corporation in 2005, EdSolutions served more than 25,000 children in more than 300 schools with million in revenues.
“Students in the U.S., as compared to other countries, spend half as much time in core subjects annually. If our students are going to be competitive in the global market then we need to provide more academic enrichment activity opportunities,” Wilson said.
And to be competitive in the global market, students need strong backgrounds in math and science—the areas in which Tutapoint.com specializes.
“Tutapoint is filling a gap left vacant for secondary education in the areas of math and science,” Wilson added. “The No Child Left Behind Act raised the bar for skills mastery in reading and language arts, math, and science, but our students today are struggling to achieve adequate progress. In the last eight years the focus has been in providing after school services to elementary school children, but now the pendulum is shifting to high school students.”
Beyond subject matter, in Wilson’s view, online tutoring offers busy high-school students one other important advantage.
“Online tutoring allows flexibility for the student,” Wilson explained. “They can receive assistance 24/7, where in traditional tutoring the student would need to adhere to a specific schedule. If a student was having difficulty understanding a new concept that had been introduced today in school, he could go online and get immediate clarification. In the traditional tutoring framework, that student might have to wait days before he would see his tutor, which could result in a missed opportunity for clarification, then the student could fall further behind in his subject area.”
Dr. Wilson’s first task at Tutapoint.com will be to develop a strategic plan with Duques and co-founder Michael Callaghan.
“I have committed the next five years to making Tutapoint one of the largest national providers of online tutoring services with national brand recognition,” said Wilson. “Who knows? Perhaps we will add additional offerings in professional development, executive leadership, and management!”
